Tips for first-time movers: what to look out for on your first move?

The first move is a demanding task, but from more than 25 years of experience we know what makes it easier: a vetted moving company, a written quote and a realistic schedule. Start with these five questions if you are moving for the first time.

In more than 25 years we have seen a lot: list-makers, people who plan well ahead, people moving because of an unexpected situation, families with children and families who have to move valuable possessions. There are a few things that take little effort to follow but help a great deal in this unusual situation.

How to check the moving company?

The most important question: is the company registered and insured? Ask this first. Look at its website, its references and its Google and Facebook reviews.

Customers return to the company they were satisfied with; more than 70% of our customers are returning clients. Customer feedback matters not only to the future mover but also to the moving company, so it can improve its service.

Should you deal with a broker or directly with the moving company?

Ask whether they transport your belongings themselves or are intermediaries who pass the job on to another mover for a fee. It is always better to make the agreement directly with the company that turns up with the truck: a subcontractor has no direct relationship with you, and in the event of a complaint the situation is more difficult. If you are not satisfied with the helpfulness during the phone call, look for another mover.

What services should you ask for?

Decide what you will do yourself and what you will entrust to the company. Some people pack themselves to reduce the cost, others choose the full service with boxes, packing and unpacking.

Ask whether the company provides boxes of several sizes and packing materials, and on what terms. With us there is no rental or usage fee for moving boxes, only a deposit that is refunded when you return them; packing materials are a separate item in the quote.

What should you ask for in writing?

Don't rely on a price given over the phone: ask for the quote in writing so you can compare it with other companies and check every item later. The quote should show how many movers and what size truck are coming, from when to when the time is counted, whether there is a minimum charge, and whether the amount is net or gross. We confirm every order in writing.

When should you start looking for a mover?

For the end of the month and weekends it is worth requesting a date 1–2 weeks in advance, as these are the most sought-after days; shorter notice is also possible, it is worth asking. Based on the written quote you receive after the free on-site survey you can decide calmly, and you still have time for packing too.

Frequently asked questions for first-time movers

At least 1-2 weeks in advance, so you have time to compare quotes and arrange a date for the day you want.

Check that the company is registered and insured, ask for a written quote, and make sure you are dealing directly with the moving company, not a broker.
