After a move it is not enough to register your change of address at the government office: your bank, insurer, employer, GP and service providers all need the new address. This list goes through who to notify, when, and what most people forget.
After the move, the most annoyance is caused not by the boxes but by letters arriving at the old address. A missed deadline for the vehicle registration or a forgotten notification to the insurer surfaces months later. This article goes through, in order, who you need to notify of your new address and what to start with.
The deadlines are the general rules in force at the time of writing. Before dealing with official matters, check the current description on magyarorszag.hu, as these change from time to time.
Address registration at the government office
This is the first and only item with a real deadline. The new address must be registered within three working days of moving in, at the government office or the document office. Registration is free, and you receive a new address card on the spot.
Bring your identity document, the old address card and, if you are not the owner of the property, the consent of the host, that is the owner or the landlord. A parent registers the address of minor children, in one go.
Vehicle registration and parking permit
The vehicle registration document shows the owner’s address, so after moving it also has to be replaced, likewise at the government office. The driving licence does not show an address, so it does not need to be. What most people in Budapest forget: the address-based residential parking permit becomes invalid in the old district, and the new one has to be applied for at the new district council. Without it, the first month can start with a parking fine.
Tax authority, employer, GP
As a private individual, your address is usually transferred from the personal data register to the tax authority, but it is worth checking on your client gate data sheet. As a sole trader or a company, a change of registered seat, premises or mailing address must be reported separately. Your employer needs the new address for payroll and official correspondence.
Your social security number does not change, but your GP district does: register with the GP and paediatrician for your new address, otherwise prescriptions and referrals will be cumbersome.
Bank, insurer, loans
Notify your bank and lender of the change; in most places this can be done in online banking. For home insurance it is not enough to change the address: the new property needs a new contract or an amendment, preferably from the day of the move, and the insurance on the old flat should be cancelled or transferred to the buyer. For car insurance, the address may also affect the premium, so notify them too.
Utilities and service providers
Electricity, gas, water, district heating: at the old address, transfer or cancellation with the meter reading on the day you move out, and at the new address, transfer to your name. That is why we always ask you to photograph the meter readings in both flats on moving day.
Waste collection and the building’s managing agent must also be notified; the new resident is registered for the common costs. Request the transfer of internet and TV one or two weeks in advance, because technician appointments fill up.
Mail forwarding
For a fee, Magyar Posta forwards mail arriving at the old address to the new one. It is worth ordering this before the move, because this way forgotten notifications still turn up months later, rather than landing in the old resident’s letterbox.
Easy to forget
School, nursery, crèche, gym, private practice. Saved delivery addresses at web shops and parcel services, billing addresses of subscriptions and loyalty cards. For a dog, the address in the chip register and the dog register. Billing details of the motorway vignette and parking apps. None of these is urgent, but together they add up, so set aside half an hour just for this in the week of the move.
The full timeline of the move can be found in the moving checklist article.
