Moving in Budapest in 2026 mostly comes down to the details: parking, entry permits, the lift, house rules and a precise written quote. We have collected seven points that make choosing a moving company and moving day itself more predictable.
Even a long loading time can increase the cost of a move, even if the new flat is only a few streets away. A truck parked further away or a stairwell that is too narrow can easily rewrite the day’s schedule. That is why in Budapest it is worth discussing the on-site conditions thoroughly when choosing a mover.
If you are moving in 2026, the following seven points will help you anticipate the tasks and the expected costs.
1 Ask for a detailed written quote
A favourable hourly rate does not yet tell you how much the whole move will cost. A quote is really useful when it shows exactly what work, how many people and what kind of billing it covers.
It is worth asking in advance:
- How many movers and how big a truck will arrive?
- When does the billed time start and stop?
- Is there a minimum fee, a call-out fee or a separate travel cost?
- Does the amount include packing and furniture assembly?
- Could there be a separate charge for stairs, heavy items or waiting?
- Is the quoted price net or gross (VAT included)?
Also clarify the terms of payment, invoicing and rescheduling. For a fixed-price offer, it should be written down which tasks it applies to and how additional work requested later will be billed. If you ask several companies for quotes, give them all the same information.
2 Show the flat and the furniture that is harder to move
A “two-room flat” alone is not enough to assess the job. Transporting a few pieces of disassembled furniture is a different task from moving a study full of books, a large corner sofa and a solid wood wardrobe.
Make a list of the larger items and indicate the approximate number of boxes. Send photos of the bulky furniture, the entrance and the narrow stair landings. For both addresses, give the floor, the lift size and the expected carrying distance from the gate.
Mention a piano, a safe or particularly valuable items at the very first discussion. Moving these may require separate preparation and suitable equipment. For more complex moves, request an on-site survey.
3 Arrange parking and entry separately
In Budapest, the loading space is one of the most important organisational questions. If the truck can only stop at the other end of the street, every box has to travel further. With hourly billing this can show in the final amount.
At both the departure and arrival addresses, clarify where the vehicle can stop, what signs are in place and whether prior arrangements are needed. If you plan to reserve a parking space or use public space in another way, ask the relevant local council or road authority about the conditions. Do not build your loading plan on crates or chairs placed in the street.
Entry permission must be checked separately. According to the Budapest Közút information, in restricted freight zones the vehicle’s maximum permitted gross weight and the restrictions of the target area matter; protected zones have their own conditions. Based on the exact address and the chosen vehicle, agree on whether a permit is needed, who arranges it and who pays for it.
The current conditions can be checked in the Budapest Közút administration information . This should be done well before moving day.
4 Check the lift and the rules of the building
Just because there is a lift, the sofa will not necessarily fit in. The width of the lift door, the size of the cabin and its load capacity all matter. Measure the stair landings and the entrance of the new flat too, especially for large furniture.
Ask the building manager about the local rules on lift use and moving. Agree on when loading is allowed and how the lift, walls and floor will be protected. It is also worth letting the neighbours know in advance when to expect more activity in the stairwell.
5 Agree on the packing tasks
It easily causes delays if the movers are waiting for items ready for transport while the kitchen cupboard is still full. Clarify at the quote stage what you will prepare and what you entrust to the team.
Put books in smaller boxes, protect fragile items individually and fill the empty spaces. Write on the side of the box which room it goes to and mark it if fragile. A label like “kitchen – glasses” is far more useful when unpacking than “misc”.
Remove loose items from furniture. If you also need assembly, say so in advance. Documents, keys, medicines and everyday valuables should stay in a separate, easily accessible bag.
6 Check out the company and ask about damage handling
Before choosing, check the company’s name and contact details, look at the references and read several detailed customer reviews. During the discussion, notice whether you get clear answers to your specific questions.
It is also worth asking in detail about insurance: what damage does it cover, up to what value, is there an excess, and how should damage be reported? Ask separately about items you packed yourself and about high-value belongings. The cover is always determined by the terms of the specific contract.
Take photos of fragile or valuable furniture before departure. On handover, check the items together, and report any damage noticed immediately, photograph it and record it in writing.
7 Leave some buffer time on moving day
Leave a time buffer between the key handover and the arrival of the movers. If the new flat can only be entered in the afternoon, the team needs to know this at the planning stage. Also take into account the traffic situation, road closures and any entry time windows.
Someone should be at the new flat to show where each piece of furniture and box goes. This avoids having to move a heavy wardrobe to another room again later.
Before departure, check the cellar, the balcony and the storage room too. On handover, check that all the agreed tasks have been completed.
What determines the price of a move, and how to compare quotes?
The cost of a move depends on the amount of belongings, the distance between the two addresses, parking and stopping options, the carrying distance, the floor and the size of the lift. Packing or boxing increases the total, and heavy items (grand piano, upright piano, safe) are priced individually. At Herkules-Trans, moves within Budapest are billed by the hour: HUF 18,000 base fee + HUF 18,000/hour with a 20 m³ truck and 2 movers, HUF 24,000 + HUF 24,000/hour with 3 movers; the minimum charge is the base fee plus 2 hours of labour, and there is no call-out fee within Budapest. The full price list is on the moving prices oldalon van.
All prices shown are net amounts and do not include VAT at the applicable rate.
You can only compare quotes if you give every company the same information and get a written quote from each. For larger volumes or difficult loading conditions, ask for an on-site survey and show every room, including the cellar, attic and garage.
Why is a suspiciously cheap mover a warning sign?
Almost every company advertises a good price, but that does not mean you should jump at the cheapest offer. If a quote is much lower than the others for the same service, that is a warning sign: it often hides extra costs, untrained staff or missing insurance, and in case of damage the repair is on you. Always choose a registered, insured company, check its references and reviews, and hire trained movers even on a small budget.
Frequently asked questions about moving in Budapest
How much does a move in Budapest cost
An exact amount can only be given once the items to be moved and the on-site conditions are known. The price may be affected by the number of movers, the duration of the work, the distance, the floor, parking, and packing and assembly. Ask for a detailed quote for your own move.
When is an entry permit needed
Not every move requires one. Whether a permit is needed depends on the exact location, the zone and road restrictions and the vehicle data. This must be checked with the mover in advance; the parking conditions should also be agreed separately.
Who provides the moving boxes
This needs to be discussed with the chosen company. HerkulesTrans provides free moving boxes; agree on the quantity needed and the details of delivery and collection with our staff in advance.
What makes a move more expensive?
Primarily the quantity, the distance, the lack or size of a lift, and special, overweight items (piano, safe).
Is it worth accepting the cheapest offer?
Not necessarily – a strikingly low price often hides extra costs, so always ask for a detailed written quote.
How do I know whether a moving company is reliable?
Check whether it is registered and insured, then check its Google and Facebook reviews and references.
Why is a conspicuously cheap offer risky?
Because it often hides extra costs or unqualified labour, which can end in damage or surprise costs.
